Symptoms and courseAcute infectious rhinosinusitis is one of the most common conditions in humans, particularly in the paediatric population. Infection occurs via the droplet route. The incubation period of the disease lasts 24-36 hours. The aetiological agent in the vast majority of cases is a virus.
Symptoms and course acute infectious rhinosinusitis
In the course of the disease, the following phases are distinguished:
- initial - a scratching and burning sensation in the throat and nose for several hours, redness and dryness of the nasopharyngeal mucosa,
- rhinitis - several days of watery nasal discharge, initially unilateral, general symptoms in the form of headache, malaise, general malaise, lack of appetite, increasing symptoms of nasal obstruction, often painful abrasions of the skin around the anterior nostrils,
- mucous - increase in general symptoms, tearing,
- bacterial infection and complications - not always present, but possible bacterial rhinosinusitis, otitis media, laryngitis, tracheitis, pneumonia,
- recovery - resolution of symptoms.
Acute infectious rhinosinusitis lasts up to 4 weeks, is treated symptomatically and generally leaves no lasting signs. However, antibiotics may be necessary in later stages of the disease due to bacterial infection and complications .
