Hygiene of dentures - Symptoms and course
The most important rules of denture care:
- Dentures should be cleaned after every meal with a jet of warm water, using a soft toothbrush and toothpaste designed for this purpose. Particular attention should be paid to cleaning the surface of the denture that is in contact with the gums and palate. This is where food debris accumulates and can cause gum disease, irritation and bad breath. Cleaning should be gentle, without excessive pressure. Cleaning tablets can be used as an additional hygienic measure. The tablet is dissolved in warm water and then the denture is placed in it. It is important that the denture is fully immersed in the solution. After about 15 minutes, the denture should be removed from the solution and rinsed.
- The denture should not be used around the clock. It is best to remove it overnight, and if this is not possible, you should take a few shorter breaks from wearing it. After removal, the denture should be washed and then placed in a container and kept dry. It should not soak in water overnight.
- Once every one to two weeks, the denture should be cleaned with a special liquid. This 'thorough' cleaning should also be done after any infection of the mouth, throat, nose, sinuses, etc. This reduces the risk of reinfection.
- Antiseptic mouthwashes are also helpful. Keep the preparation in the mouth for 30-60 seconds and then spit it out. Do not rinse the mouth with water.
- Do not take excessively long (several days) breaks from wearing the denture.
