MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides, or medium chain fatty acids. This type of fatty acid is contained in some medicated mixes: Bebilon Pepti MCT, Humana MCT, Pregestimil.
Dairy blends - Symptoms and course
MCT fats are a solid component of breast milk, usually accounting for around 2% of total fat. Their absorption is faster than that of longer-chain acids and does not burden the intestinal lymphatic system. Despite these advantages, according to current European Commission guidelines, MCT fats are not recommended as an ingredient in standard mixtures for healthy children.
The reason for this position is the documented numerous unfavourable biological properties of medium-chain fatty acids. They are characterised by a lower energy value compared to long-chain acids, which can lead to caloric deficiencies. They also significantly increase the osmolarity of the milk mixture. Furthermore, it has been shown that an increased proportion of MCT fats in a child's diet can lead to deficiencies in essential fatty acids (NNK cells T).
When to go to the doctor and treat
Formulations containing MCT fats are recommended for the treatment of the following selected conditions:
- liver failure, chronic cholestasis
- exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
- reduction of the absorptive surface of the intestines (chronic malabsorption syndromes, Crohn's disease, short bowel syndrome)
- lymphangiectasias, lymphangiectasia
- congenital defects in fatty acid metabolism
Their use must be preceded by consultation with a doctor.
Dairy blends - Treatment
Preparations containing MCT fats cannot be regarded as nutritional supplements as an alternative to "normal" milk mixtures. Their use should be limited to medical indications.
