Pneumococci (Streptococcus pneumoniae), are bacteria that cause serious infections in children, such as meningitis, septicaemia and pneumonia.
Pneumococci - Symptoms and course
Pneumococcal vaccination is routinely used in many countries (e.g. the USA and Germany). In children under 2 years of age, only modern conjugate vaccines are used (a product called Prevenar is currently available in Poland).
In children over 2 years of age, older generation polysaccharide vaccines may be used (e.g. Pneumo-23, Pneumovax-23). Immunisation of children aged 2-5 years requires only one dose of vaccine. No booster vaccination is necessary.
When to go to the doctor and treat
Contact your paediatrician or GP if you wish to additionally immunise your child against serious pneumococcal infections. Please note that this is an additional vaccination and requires the parents to purchase the vaccine.
