Symptoms and course vomiting in pregnancy
The significance of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy has not been clearly explained. It is assumed that they are the result of the pregnant woman's response to rapid changes in hormone concentrations - increased concentrations of sex hormones in the blood have a direct irritating effect on the gastric mucosa, causing nausea and vomiting. It is a fact that they often occur in the first trimester of pregnancy, more often in women who are pregnant for the first time, but most often do not entail a risk for the foetus. Nausea is often the first symptom of pregnancy, occurring in about two thirds of pregnant women. They are usually most intense in the morning, but can also occur at any time of day.
The vomiting that accompanies nausea can be very unpleasant for the pregnant woman, as it usually occurs in the morning and the empty stomach at this time expels irritating gastric juice. Vomiting usually intensifies when the pregnant woman becomes upset or experiences stress. However, they only sometimes lead to severe dehydration and subsequent metabolic acidosis. Usually, like nausea, they are gradually relieved from the 10th week of pregnancy to cease completely after the 14th week.
When to go to the doctor and treat vomiting in pregnancy
A doctor should be consulted when nausea and vomiting make it impossible to take meals and when vomiting occurs more than 3-4 times a day.
Treatment vomiting in pregnancy
In case of persistent nausea, foods rich in vitamin B and C should be introduced into the diet. In addition, it is advisable to lie in bed and to limit drinking to inert fluids (water, tea, herbal drinks). If there is no improvement, a doctor should be consulted.
