How do we treat spider bites?

Spiders primarily bite when threatened. Only some species are capable of piercing human skin. If a spider already bites a human, the most common effect of such an 'encounter' is the appearance of inflammation, itching and redness.

Angle spider bite

Theprotractor sp ider is one of the most common spiders in our country. At least several species of angular spider live in Poland. The lesser house angle spider and the greater house angle spider were first described in the 19th century. The house angle spider is easy to recognise - it has characteristic black lines on its back, which form an unfinished 'X' sign. In addition, it is distinguished by its very hairy legs. The size that lesser house nibblers reach ranges from 1-1.2 cm, while greater house nibblers grow up to 1.8 cm and are characterised by a yellow spot on their back. Angles only bite when they feel threatened. They are not venomous, but their bites can be very painful. Redness and a characteristic mark appear at the site of the bite, and an itching sensation may accompany us for a long time. Note: People who are allergic to spider venom should see a doctor.

Cross spider bite

Cross spiders are considered to be venomous, but to date there have been no reports of complications following a bite in Poland. Cross-legged spiders are distinguished by the characteristic cross mark on their abdomen. Interestingly, cross spiders - according to folk beliefs - were ideal indicators of... the weather. Spiders that moved little or crawled down the web from the ceiling were thought to herald rain. If a spider was seen moving, the weather was predicted to be fine. The bite of a crossbite is painful, and swelling and soreness may occur after the bite. The bite is associated with the appearance of characteristic two spots on the skin and swelling around the wound.

Bite of the cave netter

The cave web worm is ranked among the most venomous spiders that live in our country. The venom is not fatal, however, the pain from the bite is similar to that from a hornet bite. Cave networms primarily inhabit basements, caves and sewer manholes.

Striped tiger bite

The bite of a tiger is similar in intensity to the pain after a wasp bite. Swelling, pain and redness appear at the site of the bite. Striped tigers are mainly found in meadows, although they can also be found in gardens, where they like to live on fruit bushes.

Bite of the armyworm

The venom of the armyworm causes severe pain, chills and inflammation. Symptoms after an armyworm bite can last up to two weeks.

How do we treat spider bites?

Arachnid bites are not usually dangerous to humans. Anti-itch ointments or drinking lime are usually sufficient. However, if you are allergic - see a doctor immediately. In extreme cases, anaphylactic shock can occur. If you feel short of breath or start coughing after a spider bite, call an ambulance! If someone in your vicinity begins to experience these symptoms after an "encounter" with a spider - contact the emergency services immediately!
