MAC, or arthrogryposis, is the medical term for a syndrome of symptoms caused by joint contractures. These contractures are diagnosed in the child at birth and do not show a progressive tendency. There are many theories as to why arthrogryposis develops, but its aetiology is still not fully understood. Many types of MAC can be distinguished, depending on how they are classified. The overriding aim of rehabilitation measures is to maximise the child's improvement and prepare them for independent functioning.
