The skin of a newborn baby shows a certain degree of structural and functional immaturity. The process of maturation and adaptation of all skin structures is most intense at the age of 2-3 years and ends at puberty.

Skin care products should be selected according to the age of the child. A child of 8 years of age no longer requires special cosmetics.

The barrier function is not fully developed, so cosmetics should support it. They should also prevent irritation and damage to the epidermis. Cosmetics should not contain colouring agents, fragrances or excessive (non-compliant) amounts of preservatives due to the possibility of irritation and allergies. Washing with water alone at a temperature of 37° is sufficient to clean the skin folds and anal area in a newborn baby. Oily soaps are used. Shampoos should not cause eye pinching or a feeling of irritation.

Oils and lotions are best for moisturising the newborn's skin. After the first month of life, creams can be used. In the area of folds, creases or nappy adherence, powders or dusters should be used. It is important not to use powders together with oil. The use of soaps and detergents with a strong impact on the epidermis and lipid mantle should be avoided.

The epidermal barrier function will be effectively supported by emollients. The child's skin has a reduced mechanical resistance and reduced thermoregulation capacity, so it is necessary to dress the child appropriately. The ability to protect against infection is constantly improving, so good hygiene is important. For the care of the newborn's skin, a mild soap, milk/olive, a baby powder or powder and an anti-irritant cream are completely sufficient.

In infancy, shampoo, bath lotion, moisturising and protective creams, care wipes and sunscreen should be added to the cosmetics. At 2-4 years of age, the shampoo used can have substances in it that make combing easier. At this age, children are already using toothpaste and lip protection sticks.
