Body language - what do gestures mean?

Hands

It is possible to guess our interlocutor's true intentions from body language.

Body language, gestures and behaviour are very useful in business (during negotiations, meetings), but also in everyday individual conversations. Non-verbal communication serves to complement speech and helps to reinforce the message being conveyed.

In body language, types of non-verbal expression can be distinguished:

  • mimicry (facial expression),
  • kinesics (body position, posture, gestures),
  • proxemics (distance from the interlocutor)
  • para-language (voice - pitch, intensity).

In order to achieve the desired goals during a conversation, special attention must be paid to the distance from the interlocutor. Space dictates certain types of behaviour, so for example, when taking a seat at a table, you have to be aware that the choice of the table will influence your posture and the conversation.

According to the experts, the most favourable position at the table is the "oblique" position (through the corner of the table), because we can sit close to our interlocutor and talk freely, while at the same time the separating piece of the tabletop makes you feel safe and neutral. This position allows unrestricted eye contact and avoids the territorial division of the desk surface.

Everyone has spheres that should not be violated when meeting an interlocutor.

  • The intimate zone has a range of 45cm and is defined by touch, warmth and body odour. It is intended for very close people with whom we form emotional bonds.
  • The personal zone has a range of 120cm and is intended for friends and confidential conversations - this boundary is sensed by the eyes and ears. The official zone has a range of 360cm and is the area found in meetings, gatherings, etc.
  • The public zone reaches beyond 360cm, occurs in large meeting rooms and discourages dialogue.
