Constipation in young children is most often linked to diet, insufficient hydration, stress or poor bowel habits. An adequate intake of fibre, which supports healthy bowel function, is crucial in preventing constipation; however, both a deficiency and an excess of fibre can exacerbate the symptoms. It is equally important to drink water regularly, as insufficient fluid intake causes stools to become harder and more difficult to pass. Regular meals also have a beneficial effect on bowel movement patterns. In cases of constipation, it is advisable to limit highly processed foods such as sweets and fast food, as well as foods low in fibre.
