Mental health conditions often carry a great deal of stigma, with treatment focusing on approaches that alleviate or ameliorate symptoms. The current need for people to have more control over both their lives and their treatment and mental health services has spawned a new type of treatment approach in the field of psychiatry - the consumer model of recovery.
