Causes of snoring

Snoring is an integral part of sleep for many people. As statistics show, snoring is an ailment that mainly affects men. It can be influenced by a poor diet and going to bed late. In women, the problem increases especially after the menopause, when the hormonal balance in the body is disrupted. Snoring largely affects obese people, those struggling with excessively high blood pressure, as well as those who smoke and consume alcohol immediately before bedtime. Age is also important - the older we are, the more likely we are to start snoring.

However, there can be many more causes of snoring, among them:

  • swelling of the airway walls as a result of infection or allergy,
  • nasal patency due to a crooked septum, polyps in the nasal cavity or infections,
  • hypertrophy of the palatine or pharyngeal tonsils,
  • abnormal structure of the throat - an elongated uvula or soft palate that narrows the airflow pathway,
  • weakness of the pharyngeal musculature.

Treatment of snoring

There are many specifics available on the market that can help us relieve and alleviate the unpleasant symptoms. Among these are:

  • nasalinserts - these dilate the nasal septum, improving airflow through the nose,
  • throat sprays - are designed to strengthen the muscular tissues in the throat to reduce the vibrations responsible for snoring,
  • nasaldrops - improve airflow through the nose and throat,
  • oral leaves - have a strengthening effect on the walls of the throat and palate.

It is also worth eliminating the factors that contribute to us snoring. So avoid smoking cigarettes and try not to consume large amounts of alcohol before bedtime, and eat your last meal about two to three hours before going to bed. Let's get rid of excess weight, especially excess fat in the neck and throat area. Try to sleep in a position on your stomach or side, not on your back. Bedrooms should be well aired out before bedtime and have the right temperature and humidity. Excessive dryness of the air leads to drying of the mucous membranes and can therefore aggravate snoring. In addition, a snorer should use a suitably shaped pillow for sleeping. The pillow should not be too large or too flat and too soft. An active lifestyle will also be effective in the fight against snoring.

When snoring is a nuisance and home and pharmacological methods do not help, it is worth consulting an ENT doctor who will indicate the appropriate treatment. Very often the only way to get rid of sn oring is through surgery, e.g. in the case of a crooked nasal septum.
