Disease course

Phlebitis can be limited or diffuse. In either case, the condition develops inflammation and swelling in the structures of the vagus. The limited form usually involves inflammation of the costal capsule of the lateral semicircular canal. It is most often a consequence of perlaque otitis media. It is characterised by the onset of dizziness - experienced as a spinning sensation, often combined with nystagmus. The movement of the eyeballs is then directed towards the affected ear. This is accompanied by progressive hearing impairment and sometimes a 'ringing' sensation in the ears.

What is caused by cellulitis?

Diffuse otitis is most often a complication of infectious diseases (both bacterial and viral), and can also develop after surgery on the middle ear or as a complication of otitis media. It presents with severe dizziness combined with nausea and vomiting. The nystagmus, as in limited inflammation, is initially directed towards the healthy ear, but as the disease progresses there is a change in eye movement towards the affected ear - an unfavourable prognostic factor.

Hearing impairment also develops in the course of diffuse inflammation . It is thought that ototoxic drugs may also have some role in the development of vagusitis.

Treatment primarily consists of treating the underlying disease, a complication of which is vestibulitis. This is supplemented by antibiotic therapy in combination with anti-inflammatory drugs and drugs to relieve vertigo. As far as prognosis is concerned, usually the symptoms disappear after about 2-3 months, sometimes the dizziness may persist longer. Permanent hearing damage is very rare.
