Candida albicans is a saprophyte in the human body, meaning that it is part of the natural intestinal microflora and does not cross natural mucosal barriers. However, pathological conditions such as intestinal candidiasis (caused by reduced host immunity and excessive chronic yeast overgrowth) result in ulceration of the mucosa of the aforementioned section of the gastrointestinal tract.
