Puerperal infection is one of the complications of the postnatal period. The symptom common to the different types of infection is a sustained fever above 38℃ for at least two days. Other symptoms depend on the location of the infection. The mainstay of treatment is the inclusion of antibiotic therapy and, depending on the type of infection, additional procedures such as uterine curettage or surgical debridement of the wound are sometimes necessary. The symptoms of a puerperal infection should not be ignored, as it can lead to serious and sometimes even fatal complications.
