What are sinuses?

The paranasal sinuses (Latin for sinus paranasales) are situated in the visceral bones of the skull, where they are connected to the nasal cavity. They are made up of an undulating mucous membrane. They develop already in foetal life. The paranasal sin uses consist of the frontal sinus, the sieve cells, the sinus or wedge sinuses and the maxillary sinuses.

Diseases of the sinuses

With regard to the course, a distinction can be made between acute sinusitis - this is the result of a viral or bacterial infection. Another condition is recurrent sinusitis - a minimum of four incidences per year, interspersed with about 7 weeks of recovery. Another condition is chronic sinusitis, which is when the symptoms of inflammation persist for more than 6 weeks or there have been more than four incidences of sinusitis over the course of a year. The main symptoms of sinusitis include infection, accompanied by a high fever and pain in the forehead, jaw or nasal root. There are factors that increase the possibility of sinusitis are carrying group A streptococcus, allergic rhinitis, curvature of the nasal septum.

Treatment

Antibiotics are primarily used to treat sin usitis. Sinus rinsing procedures (the so-called Proetz procedure), the use of mucokinetic and mucolytic medicines and drops to reduce swelling are also recommended.

Prevention

  • Do you wash your head in the morning? Don't go out with wet or un-dried hair.
  • Wear a hat or ear muffs.
  • Protect your throat - wear scarves, scarves.
