IPL stands for Intense Pulse Light , a source of intense light. It is a technique using a device whose essence is phototherapy using pulsed light in aesthetic medicine treatments.
The energy source is a lamp emitting diffuse light of varying lengths from 410 to 1300nm. In this form, the rays can reach skin layers of different depths and, additionally, thanks to the use of different filters, have a multidirectional effect, thus removing multiple lesions at the same time.
For the effects to be visible, however, it is necessary to perform a series of such treatments.
The main indications for the use of this method are :
- hyperpigmentation,
- juvenile acne,
- lentigines,
- facial erythema,
- rosacea,
- photo-rejuvenation,
- hair reduction.
In the case of photorejuvenation treatments, the effect of light is to activate the skin's fibroblasts to produce collagen, i.e. deep stimulation, which can lead to a shallowing of wrinkles. In addition, an improvement in skin tone and a reduction in discolouration can be achieved.
A particularly good effect is obtained in dermatological conditions with facial erythema, especially in rosacea, a visible reduction in redness can be achieved after just a few treatments.
IPL treatments can be particularly recommended for people with sensitive skin who are afraid of more advanced techniques.
However, it is important to note that there are patients for whom these treatments should not be performed.
The most important contraindications to the treatments are:
- pregnancy,
- skin infections such as herpes,
- photoallergic and phototoxic reactions,
- use of photosensitising drugs (e.g. diuretics - furosemide, cardiovascular drugs - propranolol, some antibiotics - tetracyclines, some antiemetics, diabetes drugs, antifungals, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, some vitamins).
Although rare, side effects may occur in some individuals:
- erythematous reaction,
- blistering reaction,
- post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation,
- scarring,
- pruritus,
- photophobia.
However, these symptoms are rare.
With regularity, IPL treatments can give very good results.
