Woman drinking wine

The study found that women with bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) have alcohol problems seven times more often than healthy women. It also found that men with BPAD experience such problems three times more often than healthy men.
For sick men with concurrent alcohol problems, there tended to be a family history of addiction, while for women, the reason for turning to alcohol tended to be a desire to forget problems.

Study conducted on a group of people with BPAD.
