Brief intervention has been shown to be an effective method to help reduce alcohol consumption in patients presenting to emergency departments for alcohol misuse, according to information published in the September issue of the electronic version of The Lancet.

The randomised, single-blind study was conducted on a group of 599 alcohol-abusing patients treated in emergency departments. Short interventions were conducted by specially trained staff.
