Bipolar disorder (MD) ranks seventh among mental illnesses causing immense suffering and reduced quality of life. Its prevalence ranges from 0.3% in Taiwan to 1.5% in New Zealand. People between 30 and 44 years of age are most commonly affected. The cost of treating bipolar disorder in 1991 was $45 billion in the US and £2 billion in the UK.
