The results of a study published in the February issue of Psychosomatic Medicine suggest that depression and accompanying anxiety symptoms may lead to more frequent recurrence of inflammatory bowel disease exacerbations.

the 18-month longitudinal prospective study followed 60 patients with clinically overt inflammatory bowel disease. 17 subjects (28%) had co-occurring depressive disorders.
