Approximately 5 million children are admitted to emergency departments for head injuries each year; approximately 80% of these cases are diagnosed as mild head injuries. Because of this significant number of patients and the small number of intracranial lesions in this group of children, performing CT scans in every child after a head injury presents a significant economic problem.
