Diapering: what can be done to prevent potty training becoming a parent's nightmare?

Infant changing

Parents of young children often wonder whether their child is developing at the right pace. When asking paediatricians about this, they often hear that it is possible to define certain intervals, when the child should reach certain milestones, but that the development of children can be very different. An aspect that raises doubts among many carers is weaning from the nappy - when can the first efforts be made and how can we ensure that they are not a nightmare for parents and child?

Weaning children represents a difficulty for many parents. In different cultural circles it takes place at different ages (earlier usually in those countries where pampers are not widely available), in Poland children are usually weaned from the nappy at 18.-36 months.

However, when can weaning be attempted at all? As is not difficult to guess, there is no clear answer to this question. It all depends on the child's rate of development. However, it is assumed that most children become ready to be diaper-free around 18.-24 months of age. However, the age itself is just a number, more important are certain behaviours of the baby that may indicate that he may be ready to wean himself from the nappy.

What suggests that your child may be starting to use the potty?

Weaning attempts can be made especially with children who understand and follow simple instructions. The child's behaviour when having a bowel movement is important, such as pointing to a dirty nappy or suggesting that he passes a stool (e.g. squatting down when doing so). It will be easier to wean a child who is able to imitate actions shown to him by others.

When to delay weaning from the nappy?

Many parents dream of their child going on the potty, but there are certain situations in which it is advisable to wait. These include various stressful events for children, such as moving house or the arrival of a new family member.

Some children potty faster than others, so don't panic right away if other children around you are already using the potty. You can start to worry when your child is getting older and still cannot get rid of the nappy - difficulties with potty training may be linked to various developmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders or intellectual disabilities.
