The autonomic system of people suffering from depersonalisation disorder responds more weakly (slower and less intensely) to certain unpleasant external stimuli.

The fact that patients with this type of disorder respond more quickly to unpleasant auditory stimuli suggests that the aforementioned weaker response is caused by mechanisms that selectively inhibit emotional processes.
