Earwax is a natural substance that is secreted under physiological conditions into the external ear canal. In most cases, its production does not cause any discomfort, but only when there is too much of it. This is called a "wax plug". This occurs in 10 % of children, 5 % of healthy adults and 57 % of elderly nursing home residents.
