A study is underway at the University of Illinois at Chicago to investigate the relationship between emotional impairment and poor cognitive functioning in children with bipolar disorder using brain neuroimaging. The study shows that experiencing negative and positive emotions affect thinking differently. Brain activity during mental task solving was studied in adolescents with bipolar disorder and in healthy adolescents.
