Fetus

The changes in hippocampal volume observed in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders appear to result not only directly from a genetically determined susceptibility to schizophrenia, but also from the effects of hypoxia (during the fetal period), which modifies this susceptibility.

It appears that hippocampal volume may correlate with age of onset of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
