Bathing

It is customary to bathe or shower every day, but from a medical point of view, is this really the right thing to do? The answer may surprise you - it is not always necessary to wash your body every day; moreover, sometimes excessive personal hygiene can simply be harmful. But what determines how often you should shower or bathe - what factors determine the recommended frequency of washing?

There is a lot of talk about the health benefits of showering, bathing and sauna bathing. These include stimulating the immune system, relieving muscle and joint pain or simply bringing a feeling of relaxation. However, we bathe first and foremost to maintain hygiene and usually do so every day. From a medical point of view, however, daily bathing ... is not necessary. Furthermore, too frequent bathing can lead, among other things, to the elimination of beneficial bacteria from the skin and can also be a cause of severe dryness of the skin. This raises the question: how often should one shower?

Above all, a lot depends on a person's age. While daily showers are not absolutely necessary for newborn babies, they are absolutely necessary for adolescents.

The climate in which you live is also important: If the air outside is hot, not bathing every day can quickly result in other people running away from you. In the winter months, the skin tends to dry out, and should be cared for by modifying bathing habits accordingly. For example, limit the amount of time spent in the shower or bath, keep the bathroom door closed when washing (this increases the humidity in the room and reduces the possibility of drying out the skin) and use gentler hygiene products than usual.

When analysing how often you should wash, you also need to take into account the duties you perform on a daily basis. People who work with animals, waste or any hazardous substances should bathe every time they finish their duties for the day.
