Resuscitation is a set of actions aimed at restoring normal functions of the brain, other organs and systems and coordinating their functions at the level of the central nervous system.

In neonates, the main reason to perform resuscitation is hypoxia that has occurred during pregnancy, delivery or after birth. Before performing CPR, respiratory function, heart rate and skin colouration should be assessed.

Stages of Resuscitation:

  1. Preliminary steps:
  • protecting the newborn from cold,
  • clearing the upper airways,
  • mechanical stimulation of the skin to stimulate breathing
  1. Provision of lung ventilation:
  • using a self-expanding bag and face mask
  • after endotracheal intubation - controlled ventilation
  1. Cardiac pacing (bradycardia < 80 bpm)
  2. Pharmacological treatment.

The main goals of resuscitation are to ensure proper oxygenation and to restore normal functions of organs and systems.
