Eli Lilly, in a statement issued on 20 February 2004, warns that treatment of elderly patients with dementia significantly increases the risk of stroke and death with Zyprexa. The warning was based on the results of five clinical trials.
A similar warning was issued in April 2003 by Johnson and Johnson, the manufacturer of Risperdal, which has also been shown in studies to increase the risk of stroke in elderly people with dementia disorders.
Both drugs are widely used to treat behavioural disorders in people with dementia disorders.
