Mood swings happen occasionally to every human being, but they can be considered a problem when they occur extremely frequently and the patient starts to function less well because of them. Mood swings have many causes - they may be due to some psychological disorder, but they may also be caused by hormonal changes or... the use of certain medicines.

Mood sw ings can occur in representatives of any age group. They are typically associated with mental disorders and, indeed, the problem may be due to the occurrence of some such entity in the patient.

Basically, the most well-known problem, which can manifest itself, among other things, in mood swings, is bipolar affective disorder (BPAD). This entity is characterised by patients experiencing episodes of both depressed and elevated mood. However, mood swings may not only be caused by bipolar disorder, but may also occur in borderline personality disorder and in people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Mental disorders are not the only possible cause of mood swings. The phenomenon is sometimes associated with some changes in hormone concentrations in the body. For this reason, mood swings can be observed during puberty, peri-menopause or pregnancy, among others. Mood swings can also occur in people with endocrine disease, such as hypothyroidism.

Mood swings can also be associated with taking certain types of medication. People taking thyroid hormones, glucocorticosteroids or hormone replacement therapy may complain of mood changes. However, mood swings can also occur in patients taking antidepressants, particularly when the patient forgets to take their daily dose of medication.
