Oral contraception may lead to kidney damage in patients with type 1 diabetes

29-07-2004,

A recent study whose results were announced at the 19th Scientific Symposium of the American Society of Hypertension showed that women with type 1 diabetes who use oral contraception have an increased risk of kidney damage . The risk of albuminuria in this group is 18% compared to 2% in diabetic patients not using oral contraception. Therefore, the risk of nephropathy should be considered in each individual case of type 1 diabetes, especially in women before planned childbearing.
