Gums, alveolar mucosa, root cementum, alveolar bone, ligaments, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, nerves and connective tissue - these are the components of the periodontium. Their total surface area equals that of a hand. They therefore constitute quite a large breeding ground for infections, infestations and diseases, so they need to be cared for in the same way as we care for our teeth.
