Spinal muscular atrophy (SA) is a neurodegenerative disorder where the underlying cause of the disease is genetic. This extremely rare disease occurs on average in one person per 5 000 to 7 000 births. In most cases, it is an incurable and progressive disease entity, with the consequence that muscles weaken and atrophy.
