Peri-menopausal women have a threefold increased risk of developing depression, even if they have not previously suffered from depression, according to a study conducted by Harvard researchers, the results of which were presented at the 157th annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

The study followed 644 women with no history of depression and no risk factors for depression. The women were followed up to menopause.
