According to information published by United Press International Boston, young people with high self-esteem are less likely to become addicted to alcohol, drugs and other substances.
The Teens Today 2003 report also shows the power of self-esteem to influence sexual behaviour, ways of responding to peer group pressure, mental health and relationships with parents. Almost two-thirds (62%) of young people with high self-esteem reported a good relationship with their parents, while among those with low self-esteem, only one in three (33%) perceived their relationship with their parents as positive.
