Doctors have been telling their patients for a long time that any moles that are present on their skin should be observed. It is well known that an enlargement or change in colour of a lesion can be a cause for concern. But what can be done when a mole... disappears completely?
Nevi, which are present on the human skin, can change over the course of life. Any changes that are observed should be noted, and it is best to consult a doctor - after all, a birthmark may suddenly become asymmetrical or some content may appear around it, such as blood. However, a birthmark may also disappear completely - what could cause such a condition?
Well, skin nevi may disappear, for example due to hormonal changes - one of the conditions that is particularly conducive to this possibility is pregnancy. The body then undergoes significant changes in the levels of various hormones - in this situation, it may happen that a previously bright birthmark will take on a much darker colour during pregnancy. After termination, the situation may return to its pre-pregnancy state - in which case the patient (especially if she has not noted the presence of a light skin lesion) may be convinced that her birthmark has simply disappeared.
Another possible reason for the disappearance of a nevus may be changes in the skin formation itself. It is simply the case that some moles darken with time and others disappear. A birthmark may also disappear due to an injury to the part of the skin where the birthmark is located.
Sometimes patients are convinced that a birthmark has disappeared, when in fact... the birthmark may never have existed in the first place. This may be the case, for example, with skin warts associated with various viral infections - they are sometimes mistaken for moles and when, after some time, they are no longer present on the skin surface, the patient may be under the impression that the mole has disappeared.
Quite rarely, but nevertheless, the disappearance of a nevus may be associated with a neoplastic process. The developing neoplasm stimulates the immune system and there are situations in which the birthmark disappears while the cancer spreads in the body. Because of the existence of this type of risk, any changes concerning a skin nevus should be consulted with a doctor - not only its enlargement or change in colour, but also the situation when the nevus disappears.
