In young patients with a first episode of schizophrenia, treatment produces better results than in more chronically ill patients. Unfortunately, these good effects are much more difficult to achieve, as patients in this group particularly often withdraw their medication spontaneously while still on maintenance treatment.

The greatest challenge in this phase of treatment seems to be to skilfully explain to the patient the importance of continuing maintenance treatment and to emphasise its impact on long-term therapeutic effects.
