An IUD is a type of contraception. It is a small flexible object 2-4 cm long. It is made up of a shaft and arms that resemble the letter T.

The effectiveness of this method is estimated to be around 98-99%. It can only be purchased from a gynaecologist, as only a specialist can insert it into a woman's vagina.

There is a hormone-releasing (progestogen) IUD and a copper IUD, the so-called coil. The insertion of an IUD must be preceded by a visit to the gynaecologist who will carry out a thorough examination. This includes a cytological smear, a breast examination and tests for sexual diseases. The gynaecologist will then determine whether or not the method can be used and what type of IUD is suitable.

IUDsshould not be used by women who have not yet given birth. After giving birth, the IUD can only be inserted after six weeks. The IUD is only fitted by a gynaecologist. After insertion, you should visit your doctor regularly for follow-up.

BENEFITS:

  • protects against pregnancy;
  • can be worn for 3 to 10 years depending on the IUD;
  • does not interfere with intercourse;
  • immediately after removal, normal fertility levels appear.

DISADVANTAGES:

  • can increase and prolong the painfulness of monthly bleeding;
  • the IUD may fall out;
  • there is a risk of infection;
  • iUD can damage or puncture the uterine wall;
  • protects against AIDS/HIV
  • despite high effectiveness, there is a possibility of pregnancy.
