There is a prevalence of problems with judging other people's states of mind among patients with schizophrenia.
There are divergent views among professionals on the nature of the relationship between abnormalities in theory of mind functioning in patients with schizophrenia and other symptoms of schizophrenia. Emre Bora of Melboune University and colleagues recently reviewed a number of articles on this topic.
According to a publication in the journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, problems with theories of mind appeared to be present in all stages of schizophrenia - from the first episode of psychosis to eventual remission. Analogous abnormalities (less severe) were also found in relatives of patients with Bleurel's disease and people at risk.
