Wasting intellectual potential is not as difficult as it may seem. It depends mainly on one's ability to look at the situation or task at hand - by looking at the result, one does not focus on the smaller goals leading to the main achievement, which causes a decrease in motivation. Instead of great things, mediocre things are achieved, and all the power of intellectual potential is locked up in ideas of what could be achieved.
