Although breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women in Poland, it is usually detected at an advanced stage. At that point, local, sparing removal of the tumour is no longer possible. Among the radical procedures used is a modified radical amputation using the Madden method.
Breast cancer - amputation using the Madden method - Symptoms and course
The Madden amputation is the procedure most commonly performed in the treatment of breast cancer. Here, the breast gland tissue, the fascia of the pectoralis major muscle and the axillary lymph nodes are removed. During this procedure, the pectoralis minor muscle is transected to gain better access to the lymph nodes. Indications for this procedure include: Stage I and II breast cancer that is not suitable for sparing treatment.
This method cannot be used for tumours larger than 5 cm, in concomitant arm swelling, with distant metastases, metastases to the retrosternal lymph nodes and with an axillary lymph node bundle present.
When to go to the doctor i leczyć
There is a lot of talk about screening to detect cancer earlier. Despite this, women do not always carry out such tests. It is worth broadening public awareness of this issue and placing great emphasis also on performing breast self-examinations and regular visits to the gynaecologist.
