Diabetes, blood sugar testing

Diabetes mellitus is classified as a metabolic disease - it is associated with increased blood glucose levels. The disease can occur at different ages and several types are known. It is caused by a deficit in the production or action of insulin (a hormone secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas). Untreated chronic diabetes (hyperglycaemia) can lead to serious damage to the eyes, kidneys, brain or nerves. Diabetes always requires treatment. Unfortunately, the disease can cause numerous complications.

Complications in diabetes - Symptoms and course

The most common complications in diabetes
Hyperglycaemia is a disease in which the patient can very often have to deal with complications. Among the most commonly mentioned are:

  • ketoacidosis - is a condition that threatens the health and life of the patient. It is caused by insulin deficiency, which in turn prevents the breakdown of fats and the associated ketone bodies. As a consequence, they pass into the patient's blood and urine.
  • hypoglycaemia, occurs after taking the wrong dose of medication, but also after exercise. Too low a blood glucose level can cause fatigue, sweating, hunger, chills, disturbances of consciousness, coma and even convulsions
  • damage to the eyes, which most often manifests itself through changes in the retina
  • damage to the kidneys, which can lead to kidney failure
  • nerve fibre damage
  • stroke
  • myocardial infarction
  • diabetic foot syndrome
  • ischaemic heart disease and many others.

Wound healing difficulties, metabolic changes and a decrease in immunity (more frequent infections of various origins) are also very frequently observed in diabetics. Various skin changes are also noticeable in diabetic patients. It is important to remember that each patient should be treated individually.
