Dentures, commonly known as artificial jaws, are used for people who have no teeth at all, a reduced number of their teeth or it is not possible to place implants (because the patient cannot afford this procedure). A denture replaces the lack of their permanent teeth. It allows food to be crushed and swallowed.

Types of dentures - Symptoms and course

The type of denture should be chosen together with the dentist or prosthodontist; dentures are an individual matter for each patient. Before making a decision, it is worth considering very carefully what you expect and what is feasible in your case.

What types of dentures do we know?

Initially only removable dentures were known, with the development of dentistry, more and more different types of dentures were created. At present, we know the following dentures:

  1. Fixed, which are attached to the remaining own teeth or fitted implants and include bridges, crowns, partial crowns, inlays and others
  2. Removable, i.e. dentures that can be removed, such as onlays, clasp dentures, partial dentures and others

Before making a final decision on the type of denture, you should consult your dentist. Fixed dentures are mainly intended for people who have some teeth and can be fixed to these teeth. However, it is worth checking whether your existing dentition is suitable for the denture. Removable dentures are made when there are not enough teeth for a fixed denture (few teeth, unstable teeth, broken teeth, etc.). The denture rests on the gums and/or teeth present in the mouth.

If a decision is made to fit any of the dentures, it is advisable to treat or remove decayed or damaged teeth and also to take care of the condition of the gums (if there is inflammation or swelling), treatment is necessary. We should remember that the prosthesis is to replace missing teeth, it is used to grind food and swallow it, therefore it should not disturb, make us drunk etc.
