Diet in cancer - general principles

Healthy food

There is no miracle diet (contrary to what some authors write) that will cure cancer. However, there is evidence that proper dietary management of the patient is able to improve the overall condition of the body. Such management will assist the proper healing process.

General principles of proper nutrition in cancer

The calorific value of meals should vary between 2000 and 2500 kcal per day. These figures obviously depend on the type of cancer (it is different, for example, in gastrointestinal cancers), the general condition of the patient, gender and age.

The patient should consume a protein intake that covers about 20% of the daily caloric intake. It is recommended to eat wholesome protein (white and red meat, cheese, yoghurt, milk). 30% of daily calories should be fat, preferably vegetable (olive oil, rapeseed or sunflower oil). The remaining 50% are carbohydrates.

Qualitatively, the best are potatoes, legumes, coarse cereals, whole-grain bread. There is a rule of thumb to eat whatever you feel like, as long as it does not cause unwanted symptoms. No "revolutions" in the current diet are recommended.

When to go to the doctor and cure

During cancer therapy, patients often consult a variety of books. The book by Richard Beliveau and Denis Gingras, "Diet in the fight against cancer", is worth recommending here. It is a kind of collection of stories about why it is worth reaching for ingredients such as green tea or turmeric during cancer treatment.

If you have any problems tolerating your diet, report this to your doctor, who may recommend special protein-enriched preparations, for example.
