Gingivitis is a very serious problem for the patient and should not be underestimated. If left untreated it can lead to serious problems including tooth loss. If you notice any problems with your gums (pain, swelling, bleeding, etc.) you should contact your dentist.
Symptoms and course gingivitis
Many people do not realise that they have gingivitis problems, it is only when there is severe pain, bleeding, inability to bite food or drink, that they visit the dentist. Many people stop brushing their teeth during this period, thinking that the symptoms will go away on their own.
The immediate cause of gingivitis is usually lack of or inadequate oral hygiene, and particular attention is also paid to diet (type of food eaten), smoking and other stimulants.
One should not forget the diseases that can lead to problems and gingivitis (e.g. diabetes or leukaemia), but also the period of "hormonal storm" during puberty or menopause and, of course, pregnancy. The use of certain medications also has an impact on the development of gingivitis.
Among the most commonly mentioned symptoms are:
- pain in the gum area,
- pressure in the mouth,
- an aftertaste of pus in the mouth,
- bad breath,
- bleeding,
- wobbling and tooth loss.
When to go to the doctor and treat gingivitis
A visit to the dentist, will help us to understand, the cause, of the problems with our gums (inflammation). In order to get rid of this problem, it is necessary to completely and thoroughly remove the tartar (that has accumulated there), to observe a daily oral hygiene (thorough brushing, flossing, mouthwash). We should remember that teeth have to serve us for life, so it is worth taking care of them.
