Symptoms and course subjective impression of the presence of a foreign body in the throat

Objectively, no obstruction is found in the throat. Instead, the patient reports a subjective sensation - a ball in the throat or scratching (compared to the presence of a hair in the throat).

In addition, many patients experience squeezing, choking and difficulty swallowing saliva in the throat. Symptoms typically subside when eating, reappearing between meals. Distraction of the patient's attention or concentration of the patient on a specific, absorbing activity usually causes temporary resolution of the discomfort.

The most common cause of the globulus sensation is a neurotic disorder (conversion, somatisation of stress). A psychological examination usually reveals family problems or depression.
