Symptoms and course measles

Measles is a viral infectious disease of childhood. Its main symptoms are a high fever with a maculopapular skin rash. Most often the course is mild, but sometimes complications can occur, e.g. pneumonia, encephalitis, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and even death.

In Poland, measles vaccination is obligatory and is included in the basic vaccination series. Usually a combined MMR (rubella, mumps, measles) vaccine is administered after 1 year of age. the vaccine contains live viruses. There is also a 4-valent vaccine against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox.

Infants up to 6 months of age are protected by passively transmitted (via the placenta) antibodies if the mother has had measles or has been vaccinated. Once they have had measles, permanent immunity remains. In the prevention of the disease, isolation of patients is most important, as measles is highly contagious.
