Nail plate changes and ringworm

Nail care, nail file

Both men and women can have problems with changes in the appearance of the nail plate (e.g. shape, texture, colouring, brittleness). In some cases it is related to a deficiency of various vitamins, in others to disease, weakness of the body or nail fungus. Few patients realise that a fungal nail infection can lead to cracking and splitting of the nails. In such a situation, it is important to visit a dermatologist as soon as possible.

Changes in the nail plate a grzybica - Symptoms and course

Nail fungus can be contracted in various places, e.g. in the sauna, at the swimming pool, in the changing room, when wearing other people's clothes (socks, shoes). Other causes of nail fungus include antibiotic use (long-term), diabetes, problems with the immune or endocrine system, obesity, steroid use and problems with the digestive system (gastrointestinal disorders) and many others. It is mainly caused by dermatophytes. It can affect nails not only on the toes but also on the hands. If you suspect nail fungus in yourself or someone you know, you should visit a dermatologist.

Nail fungus requires treatment and special hygienic measures - remember that we can infect other people with it.

Nail fungus causes and symptoms

A fungal nail infection is mostly caused by dermatophytes, in very rare cases by moulds or yeasts. Toenail fungus occurs in about 50% of patients, hand nail fungus in 25%. Occasionally it is found in children, more often in adults and really often in the elderly. Nails affected by mycosis change their colour, thickness, shape, may be more brittle and fragile. They have an unsightly appearance and the sufferer may infect others. It is therefore necessary to undertake appropriate treatment.
