Symptoms and course sore throat in children

A sore throat most often occurs in the course of tonsillitis or other infections of the throat and tonsils. It is usually accompanied by a fever above 38 degrees, general weakness and abdominal pain. Due to irritation of the nerves that have their endings in the throat, the child may experience nausea or vomiting.
Increased inflammation of the tonsils and their significant enlargement can even cause breathing problems (dyspnoea) due to a reduction in airway patency.

When to go to the doctor and treat sore throat in children

Always contact your doctor quickly when a sore throat is accompanied by increased general symptoms or high fever. Infection of the throat and tonsils with severe sore throat and enlargement of the surrounding lymph nodes (especially submandibular nodes) is very often referred to as streptococcal tonsillitis - a bacterial infection with the risk of numerous complications, which therefore absolutely requires antibiotics.

Treatment sore throat in children

In older children, throat rinses with sage and chamomile infusions or over-the-counter throat tablets and aerosols can be used if the symptoms are not too severe. Your pharmacist at the pharmacy should be able to help you choose these.
